The Social Emotional Behavior Coach serves as a role model for teaching staff and helps build positive relationships that encourage growth and achievement of children in the classroom, and connection with parents/caregivers from a trauma-informed lens. (Full Position Description with detailed Performance Expectations will be shared with applicants selected for in-person interviews; to request full description, call 507-316-0610.)

Three Rivers Community Action, Inc. is a non-profit agency providing economic opportunities that strengthen individuals, families and communities in southeastern Minnesota.

This full-time position (40 hours per week) will be based in Rice County (Faribault/Northfield), and will travel regularly to all of the Agency’s Early Childhood locations, as well as for training/meetings.

Responsibilities include the following:

Classroom support/Coaching: 75%

•Observe children interacting in classroom
•Develop strategies and interventions that build resiliency and grow a child’s window of tolerance for interacting in groups. •These activities may include:Gather information from parents/caregivers, classroom staff and others, screening tools, etc. to understand what may have happened to the child
•Support classroom staff in identifying a child’s trauma triggers in classroom
•In conjunction with program’s Mental Health Consultants, work with classroom staff to help them understand why they react as they do to a child’s behavior
•Support classroom staff in adapting the classroom environment and their responses to child’s behavior based on understanding how the child may be experiencing the environment and relationships with peers and adults based on what happened to him/her
•Provide 1:1 social-emotional skill support if a child needs a stronger foundation in self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship management and responsible decision-making until the child’s tolerance is sufficient that he/she can function with classroom support
•Support classroom staff in implementing strategies and interventions that build social interaction skills/Conscious Discipline. These activities may include:

     *Interventions that build positive and effective social skills
     *Time to practice recognizing and regulating emotions
     *Using breath and movement to calm minds and bodies
     *Using books to develop curiosity and build interactive        confidence with verbal expression within the classroom environment
•Educate children on emotions, calming techniques and self-regulation skills to promote a positive learning experience and the development of empathy
•Develop behavior plans as needed with child, parent and staff

Parent support: 25%

•Support parents/caregivers in implementing Conscious Discipline strategies at home
•Connect parents/caregivers to community mental health resources

     *Work to develop and maintain positive relationships with local mental health providers
     *Maintain contacts (names, phone numbers, services provided, insurance accepted) of local mental health providers
•Coordinate site events to engage families in fun and meaningful activities
•Other responsibilities and projects as assigned by supervisor. 


Required Education/Credentials:

•A Bachelor’s degree in:

*Early Childhood; or
*Education and coursework relating to Early Childhood Education with experience teaching preschool age children; or
*Social work or psychology and coursework relating to Early Childhood Education with experience teaching preschool age children
•Family Service Credential certificate unless Bachelor’s degree is in social work. Agency will provide this training after the first year but it must be obtained with 18 months of starting

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

•Bilingual skills (English/Somali or English/Spanish)
•Have attended the five-day Conscious Discipline training with Dr. Becky Bailey
•Experience and demonstrated ability to:

     *Reduce problematic behavior in young children
     *Increase young children’s social skills
     *Decrease expulsions from ECE settings
     *Build behavior and classroom management skills of ECE providers
     *Enhance parent ability to manage problem behaviors
     *Reduce turnover in ECE staff

Basic Requirements of the Position:

•Current, valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
•Able to maintain confidentiality and data privacy policies and procedures
•Able to support agency policies and procedures
•Able to maintain required work hours including evening hours for occasional events
•Able to lift and/or carry between 20-50 pounds frequently
•Able to reach above shoulder level, bend/stoop, squat, crawl, sit on floor or small chairs, climb, kneel, balance, push/pull, fine manipulation and move quickly in the event of an emergency
