Description

Duluth Head Start is part of a mixed delivery program in Duluth Public Schools. We are located in 7 of Duluth's 9 elementary schools. We also offer 2 state funded Home Base options: one for families experiencing homelessness, which includes both HS and EHS, and one traditional Home Base Head Start program. Duluth was one of the original cities to receive a Head Start grant in 1965. It is the only Head Start in MN that has a school district as a grantee. Our teachers and family advocates are all licensed teachers and members of the Duluth Federation of Teachers. We partner very closely with Early Childhood Special Education, with whom we share professional development and engage together in Professional Learning Communities. We also partner closely with the University of MN Duluth and have participated in much research specifically on the topic of nature based preschool experiences. In the fall of 2021, we opened Oshki-Inwewin, a classroom that incorporates Ojibwe language and culture into its curriculum. We are proud to be advocates for low income families, and are committed to keep the Head Start vision alive and well in our school district.
