The Prairie Five Head Start office is funded to serve 175 Federal children ages 3-5 and 15 State Early Head Start families with pregnant mothers and children ages birth to three. Prairie Five Head Start & Early Head Start offers two program options including center-based Head Start and a home-based Early Head Start. Prairie Five Head Start also has collaborative programs with five school districts which include funding from learning readiness and early childhood family education programs. Children attend 16 different classrooms in 7 school districts. Prairie Five Head Start offers two options for families: Head Start Upon turning three, children may enroll in the program. Classrooms are in school district buildings and most operate Monday -Thursday during the school year. Depending on the town, classrooms operate either a full day or half day. During the school year classroom staff will provide each child with two home visits and every family will receive at least three contacts to discuss their child’s progress. Families also receive home visits from a Family Advocate to work on strengths, goals, needs, and are encouraged to attend Parent Meetings and become an officer at Policy Council. Comprehensive services include: • Education: school readiness goals in the areas of language, literacy, math, science, health and social/emotional skills • Health and safety • Nutrition • Family goal setting • Social services • Transition services • Services for children with disabilities • Screenings and follow-up for health, development, and behavior Early Head Start recognizes the demands of caring for very young children. Our staff values the involvement of families in their child’s learning, social, and cultural experiences. The program includes weekly home visits with parents and their child(ren), teaching and partnering with them in the areas of child development, health, mental health, family health, and development and family resources. Pregnant women and children up to 3 years old may apply for this year long opportunity.
