Executive Director Job summary
Minnesota Head Start Association (MHSA) is seeking an experienced Executive Director to lead the organization. This position represents a statewide leadership role while providing oversight and management of the day to day operations of the Association. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the organization, representing MHSA to State, Regional and Federal agencies while supporting and facilitating the vision and goals set forth under the direction of the MHSA Board of Directors. This position provides leadership to for the Minnesota Head Start community while supporting the mission of the Association, to advocate low income families and inspire high standards of service for young children by providing innovative leadership and programs to help children, families and communities to reach their full potential.  

Executive Director Responsibilities and duties

Administrative and Fiscal Management

  • Develop and implement Association work plan and budget
  • Coordinate MHSA Dues collection and create report summary
  • Work with contracted fiscal agent on weekly transmittal’s to ensure budget is on track
  • Seek donations, acknowledge donor’s, and maintain Give MN site
  • Hire and supervise staff that support the work of MHSA
  • Hire and supervise contracted individuals that provide services to MHSA 

Relationship with Board of Directors

  • Work cooperatively with the Board to create agenda and reports for meetings
  • Develop and implement a strategic plan with the Board of Directors that meets Association goals and objectives
  • Attend and participate in the Minnesota CAP Board meetings
  • Assist and support MHSA Board and its committees for planning quarterly meetings, annual meetings and conferences
  • Ensure the Association is in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations 

Relationship with Association Membership

  • Provide regular communication with membership including, Email, Facebook, Twitter and other appropriate social media outlets
  • Provide quarterly mailings with meeting minutes, training announcements and pertinent information for future meetings in a timely manner
  • Work with membership to include their ideas, input and talents to develop future initiatives and complete projects
  • Share strategic plan updates and progress
  • Coordinate, schedule and evaluate trainings put on by the Association for its members
  • Manage current projects and initiatives such as School Readiness Goals Project, Data group, and professional development opportunities
  • Create a culture of transparency and communication throughout MHSA 

Relationships with State, Federal, and Community Partners

  • Develop positive relationships with key stakeholders, including local, regional and national partners.
  • Communicate and collaborate with National Head Start Association, Region V Head Start and local community partners to enhance and support MHSA vision and mission.
  • Work closely with State partners including, but not limited to; State Head Start Collaboration office, Training/Technical Assistance providers, MN Department of Health and MN Department of Education and MN Department of Human Services  
  • Attend community/committees/advisory groups to create and sustain a shared vision for supporting children and families

Public Relations

  • Provide leadership for increasing public awareness around Head Start and the role of the MN Head Start Association
  • Develop and implement strategies aiming to promote the organization’s mission and “voice”
  • Act as the public speaker and public relations representative of the Association in ways that strengthen its profile
  • Develop positive relationships with key stakeholders at all levels
  • Have the ability to speak with and make presentations to state and federal legislators

Executive Director Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience as an Executive Director for a Private Non-Profit preferred
  • Experience working with Early Head Start / Head Start preferred
  • Passion for supporting at-risk populations
  • Experience supporting parents and children who are economically challenged
  • Demonstrated understanding of equity, bias, and inclusive communities
  • Local and National Advocacy experience preferred
  • Strong aptitude for verbal and written communication, presentation, and relationship development
  • Ability to communicate Early Head Start/Head Start vision, mission, and values
  • Excellent problem solving, analytical skills and professional judgement
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and tasks
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing landscape for children and families
  • Experience with event planning and management in person and virtually.  To include quarterly meetings, training events, parent conference
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Professional Development System and Continuous Quality Improvement
  • Ability to use a wide range of Technology
  • Outstanding leadership abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement successful strategic plans
  • Knowledge of best practices in management of programs serving children and families
  • Proactive, self-directed, able to work both independently and in collaboration with others.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fiscal management and budget in a non profit
  • Demonstrated ability to understand the broad view and extrapolate appropriate response to data
